Gaining courage and self-confidence via streaming
I started streaming on Twitch when life in academia slowed down during the COVID-19 pandemic. During my PhD studies, I rarely allowed myself the time to play video games. I missed my hobby, so I decided to use this opportunity to reacquaint myself. In addition, I didn't have that many people in my life who I could discuss games with. These factors combined led me to try streaming on Twitch.

I am so thankful for this journey, since it is ultimately what reminded me of my love for gaming and restored my old thoughts of working in the industry. I also met a lot of lifelong friends, learned plenty about video and audio production and built more confidence in speaking in public.

The experience I'm most proud of is a 12-hour charity stream that I organized in celebration for reaching 1K followers. Our community raised $2400 for mental health organization Hope For The Day. This easily surpassed my original stretch goal, and even surpassed our spontaneously created extra stretch goal. I worked for weeks putting together the program for the 12 hours, prepared some promo and thank you graphics and did my best keeping my community entertained for the duration of the stream. Everyone went over and beyond with their support and I'm proud I could bestow the community the opportunity to do something impactful together.
